INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY : 08th March 2010
Today is a red letter day for all women as the day is celebrated all over the world as International Women’s day, a day on which the contributions of women to various causes is hailed and women achievers are honoured. Women the world over have been storming several male bastions and have providing beyond the shadow of doubt that they are as competent if not more than their ale counterparts. In a society where the dice is still heavily loaded in favour of men more and more women have been moving up the rungs of the ladder in their various vocations and have been winning laurels galore.
Indian Women especially have been carving their niches and have been excelling in several fields including some which were hitherto considered as preserves of the male. As corporate leaders, as scientists, doctors and as social reformers, Indian women have been striving to raise the bar and in the process have been sources of inspiration to thousands of young women who are fortunate enough to have such ideal role models to look up-to and emulate. To put it in a nutshell Indian women have come a long way and what is heartening is that it is not only the urban, educated woman who holds her on but even her illiterate or semi-literate sister in the rural areas who too have freed herself of the shackles that bound her and has taken on roles like sarpanch of local panchayats.
It is evident that given the opportunity, women are ready to take up the gauntlet and turn up trumps in their endeavors. They never shy away from taking responsibility and their sincerity and devotion have been exemplary. We have before us several outstanding examples of women achievers, some of whom have risen from very humble beginnings of ten having to face great odds. Their success stories have been chronicled in articles and books and have served as inspiration for whole generations of women. With the passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill which provides for 33% reservation for women in legislatures and in Parliament on the anvil one can say with a fair measure of confidence that more and more women will enter the political arena and prove their credentials. India is one of those countries where the emancipation of women had come a long way and the future indeed looks rosy for all Indian women. I take this opportunity to wish all the ladies present here a very happy International Women’s Day.
